Before we have Facebook messenger with tons of emoticons and WhatsApp, Viber, social media, Yahoo messenger with purple interface which inspired a whole generation and now it is said to be dead.
Yahoo Messenger: one of our “old school” memories
Yahoo Messenger was the first chat service introduced in 1998. It allowed you to chat online with random strangers and of course your relatives either. Being announced a month ago, yesterday August 5th was expired. There was time in December last year, when Yahoo introduced the new Yahoo Messenger, then people thought that the old and new version would be integrated, so that traditional and native users would be able to transform easily. Yahoo also hoped that the service can make a comeback. In recent years, new chat apps from giant Google, Facebook, Whatsapp have drawn buzz.
Messenger service has been a battleground for Silicon Valley companies in recent years. Facebook paid $19 billion last year for WhatsApp, which is the popular chat service. Whatsapp was also co-founded by former Yahoo employees. Other counterparts like Snapchat, with its new kind of online communication, have also been a huge hit with users especially teens and young adults.
From now on, the users who used the old version and the third-party’s apps with Yahoo Messenger! supported can not send messages. However, Yahoo also starts a new beginning with Yahoo Mesenger brand new version. The company decided to focus only on 7 main products which are: Mail, Search, Tumblr, News, Sports, Finance and Lifestyles. The new Yahoo Messenger is an integral part of Yahoo Mail, but users cannot download it on desktop. The only way to access it is signing in from users’ Yahoo id, just like Google Hangouts or Facebook Messenger and install it on their Android and iOS devices.
