In 2017, many smartphones from various brands made their debut in China market. According to Counterpoint Research, the top-selling handsets list can surprise you. With the rise of many famous Chinese names, it’s no surprise that a Chinese handset has grabbed the first place. Taking up to 3% of the market, OPPO R9s became the top best-selling phone last year. Moreover, we also have two more OPPO handsets on the list. They are OPPO A57 (fourth place), and OPPO R11 (6th place).
Last year, Apple introduced a total of 3 smartphones globally: Apple iPhone 8/8Plus and the Apple iPhone X. However, the only Apple phone appears on the lists is the previous Apple iPhone 7 Plus. Furthermore, Apple is the only foreign smartphone manufacturer having a handset in the Top 10 selling report. On the other hand, the mid-range Vivo X9 finishes at third place. There are also two Vivo, Apple (iPhone 7) and Huawei phones.
However, we only sport one Xiaomi handset on the ranking – the Redmi Note 4X. In term of OPPO’s success, many media have stated that this is thanks to their marketing effort. In details, OPPO mostly focuses on advertising their products as selfie expert. Furthermore, they also rely on their large number of the offline stores. On the other hand, OPPO offers their handsets with a fair price tag ($200-$450) and sometimes limited models. As a result, this helps to boost their sales very well. Regarding different segments, the mid-range division is the most popular one in China market.

With bezel-less display smartphone joining the market, we can expect more handsets on the next ranking to feature this.
