PS3 is now more than 10 years old. It has been one of the successful devices from Sony, and helped the company stand against the competition from Microsoft’s Xbox consoles. Now, the device is going to be stopped soon!
Sony to stop PS3 production end of this month!
The PlayStation 3 has been around for more than 10 years. It is one of Sony’s weapon to fight against Microsoft in the competition of consoles. However, the 10-year-old console is about to be put to rest soon. In a recent interview with Gematsu, Sony has revealed that the company will stop production for the PS3 in Japan “very soon”. The revelation was also posted on the device’s page of the 500GB Black version, the only version which is still in production.
No specific date has been given regarding the stop of production for the PS3. However, a gameshop in Kurume, Fukuoka, Japan has tweeted that it received notification of the production stop, and it will happen at the end of this month. Sales will still continue until the remaining units are no more. Shipments will also stop by then, and all those who wants to buy the old console will have to try their luck in the second-hand market. It is inevitable that the device’s time is coming to an end!
Actually, Sony has started their plan to retire the old PS3 console back in last year. The last first-party game was way back in October. Then, in August this year, the console will no longer be able to access PlayStation Now. This does not come as that big of a surprise, considering that Sony’s consoles usually have a 10-year cycle, and this console achieved that. The console was first released in November 2006, and turned 10 years old end of last year. After production stops, updates and patches will stop as well, expectedly.
PS3: Another Sony legacy comes to rest
With all that has happened, the PS3 has served its purpose for Sony. Although PS2 is still the best selling console for Sony, this device still has a special place in Sony’s history. What is your favorite game on PS3?
