Sony Mobile Division suffers great loss, what happened?

With the recent report of the July – September 2017 period,  Sony seems to be facing a problem in their Mobile Division, with a loss of  $21.9 million in the income. Find out more about Sony’s performance during this period below.

Sony Mobile Division in decline

The latest update shows the Japanese company gains about $18.25 billion in revenue. Also, Sony manages to get a net profit of $1.15 billion. Based on the report, it seems like Sony Semiconductors department (includes image sensors for mobile products, the Game & Network Services which accounts for the PlayStation 4 sales – both hardware, and software) takes the most significant proportions in the revenue. It increases 17.9% in compared to the same period last year.

Sony has stated in their report about the reason: “This increase was primarily due to a significant increase in unit sales of image sensors for mobile products; as well as the absence of the impact of a decrease in image sensor production due to the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year”

On the other hand, of the eight business segments for Sony, only one reports witnessing an operating loss – The Mobile Communications division. The income numbers went from $32.4 million in the same three months a year ago to a loss of $21.9 million now. The sales also record a slight rise of 1.9% in raw currency, but fell flat on a yearly basis because of the unfavorable exchange rates.

What to expect from Sony in 2018?

According to the report, the company also expects to archive an 11.8% rise in sales and operating income by the end of March 31, 2018, $74.5 billion. Overall, with the increase of 22.1% in Sales and operating revenue compared to last year, Sony seems to be on the right track for the Gaming Department. But for Mobile? Let’s wait to see Sony’s next move to gain back their income. (Source)
