It looks like Snapchat is in trouble!! People claim they’re deleting Snapchat after Rihanna criticised the app for showing an ad that seemingly made light of domestic violence. Read on for more details!
People are deleting Snapchat after the controversial ad!
Last week, Snapchat released an ad that stirred quite a bit of raging storm on social media. The ad, which was apparently sponsored for a mobile game, asked Snapchat users if they would rather slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown. In a statement to BBC, the company said that the ad was “reviewed and approved in error.”
But pop star Rihanna doesn’t seem to be impressed by what the company has to say. On Thursday, the singer posted a statement on her Instagram Story; criticising Snapchat for “spending money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV (domestic violence) victims.”
After that, many Snapchat subscribers took to social media to post their disgust with the ad. Furthermore, several of them said that they would uninstall the app from their phones. And still the story doesn’t end there. Investors also took sides as Snapchat parent SNAP saw its stock slide as much as 5% to hit a low of $16.91. Before rebounding to close at $17.20, off 3.6% on the day.
Quick backstory on Snapchat’s situation
In an infamous picture after the assault, Rihanna, who was then 22, was seen with a black eye, bloody lips, and cuts on her forehead — all at the hands of her then-boyfriend rapper Chris Brown. In 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to the assault and paid a fine and did community service. The selloff in Snap shares is the second at the hands of a celebrity in less than a month. In February, social media celebrity Kylie Jenner complained about the app’s redesign, causing the company to lose more than $1 billion in market value.
