Smartphone now can become a testing device for HIV and syphilis thanks to the new add-on. This device or dongle was developed by the researchers at Columbia University. This device can help lots of people in the early detection of infection disease, especially in the remote place.
Smartphone’s dongle: new promising technology
A convenient, easy-to-use smartphone’s dongle has been designed to test patient’s blood to detect multiple dangerously infectious disease in just 15 minutes. All you have to do is prick your finger and put a drop of blood into the plastic collector which comes with the device. And then, you just need to start the accompanying apps and press the device’s big black button. After 15 minutes, you will have your result.
This innovative device works well with every type of electronics, form smartphone, tablet to computer, it works with other types of electronics. This device doesn’t even need battery to work, because all the necessary power is drawn via the headphone jack. This dongle is very low power consumption. It could detect and show the results of 41 patients on a single charge.
A recent test conducted at 3 Rwandan community clinics had shown a positive sight. In this field test, 96 patients were screened for HIV and some form of syphilis. In a 15-minute, the device provided a 96% accurate result, there is just one case of latent syphilis missing. It wasn’t perfect, but worked almost as well as an gold standard laboratory lab test to show who had active syphilis infections and who was infected with HIV.

Despite some fault, this smartphone’s donlge is still promising. With this device, we can check if we had any infection disease or not, which is very crucial, especially for pregnant woman. The trial device will have the price at $34. With this device, the researchers hope that they can reduce adverse consequences of the disease and might be able to reduce deaths by 10-fold. When HIV and other infection diseases are widely spread, this dongle is the hope.
