What is the cause of smartphone explosion and how to prevent it?
For those who haven’t known yet, Samsung has just announced an international Samsung Galaxy Note 7 recall because at least 35 devices have been reported to explode. So in this article, we’ll explain the cause of smartphone explosion and how to prevent it!
Smartphone explosion: What are the causes and how to prevent it?
The first cause of smartphone explosion is a puncture insides the battery. Dropping smartphones to the ground may lead to this issue. That puncture between the battery cells can result in a short circuit, and can lead to swelling. Smartphones with low price tag, or cheap batteries, can also have this problem. The batteries of these phones may include some rare microscopic metal particles. These tiny items may collide with the battery cells and create short circuit.
The second reason of smartphone explosion is heat. Too much heat can damage the internal cells or lead to “thermal runaway”. The heat is caused by both the environment and especially, charging. The charging process already creates an amount of heat insides the battery. Bad batteries do not cool down soon enough before they receive another wave of electricity. With the case of Samsung Galaxy Note 7, the brand has claimed that they import the battery from different suppliers. We expect that some of the suppliers may have problem in manufacturing the battery.
So what are some ways to prevent smartphone explosion? It’s nearly impossible to detect whether your phone battery has any internal problem out of the box. However, we can prevent heating issues. The general idea is that, do not let your phone overheat! Unplug the phone if it gets too hot, and wait for it to cool down. Make sure that you use original chargers, and even cable too, if the phone has Quick Charge or USB-C. You also shouldn’t leave the phone at hot locations while charging, such as under your pillow or blanket. It is annoying when you can’t watch movies while charging, but your safety should come first!
