Samsung Galaxy S9 camera sensor packs ISOCELL, onboard DRAM, 960fps vid!
With the Galaxy S9 phones, the focus was on improving the camera. To that end, Samsung unveiled the Samsung ISOCELL Fast 2L3 sensor with the onboard DRAM and 960fps video recording. Learn more Samsung Galaxy S9 camera sensor below!
Samsung Galaxy S9 camera sensor: ISOCELL Fast 2L3
According to our sources, the new ISOCELL Fast 2L3 sensor has a 3-layer design. The first layer holds the pixels that capture light while the second layer converts that into a digital information. In addition, the chipset receives the information for processing and to the phone’s RAM. Besides, Samsung has added a third layer with 512MB DRAM, which can quickly read and store the data from the sensor and much faster (1/120th seconds) than the chipset.
In details, the pixel array layer (1st layer) that converts light information into an electric signal. Next, an analogue logic layer (2nd layer) that processes the electric signal into digital code. The digital code is then sent via MIPI interface (Galaxy S9 processor) for further image tuning. After that, the code is saved to the device’s DRAM. When finished, there would be zero-shutter lag and smooth super-slow-motion video (image readouts at a higher rate).
The sensor reduces rolling shutter of the data moving process (the jello effect) and takes better photos. Moreover, the integrated DRAM supports a super-slow motion, low-light shooting, real-time HDR imaging while minimizing picture distortion. The sensor features motion detection enabling the faster slo-mo recording (960fps for a cool 32x slow down). In addition, you can snap several shots for 3D Noise Reduction in low-light or for better HDR in the daylight. The ISOCELL Fast 2L3 is a 12MP sensor with 1.4µm pixels working as a phase detection AF point (Dual Pixel autofocus).
Samsung ISOCELL plan?
The sensor is currently in mass production, which brings the smartphone camera ever closer to DSLR-grade photography. For now, Samsung has unveiled ISOCELL Dual as the camera solutions for mid-range devices. Stay tuned with us for more updates about Samsung latest tech and innovations!
