Besides three popular operating systems we already know: Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile, there are still others that you may not know. Here we have a list of 10 OSes, including the three and…
1. Symbian
Let’s meet Symbian, an excellently designed and user-friendly OS. It officially belongs to Nokia, so if there is a company which wants to use this OS, they has to ask Nokia for permission first. In fact, it is mostly known to be used in low-end handsets and unfortunately, the demand rate has even been decreasing. At the moment, Symbian mobile OS has been upgraded and capable to run smartphones efficiently. Two latest updates are Symbian ANNA and BELLE for those who are using a Nokia phone (e.g. Nokia C6-01, Nokia 603, Nokia 700, Nokia 808 Pure View, Nokia E6 (ANNA) and Nokia 701 (BELLE)).
2. Android
Google released Android OS on September 20, 2008 but with the name “Astro”. After that, its upgraded versions called “Bender” and “Cupcake” were also announced. Then, Google started a new trend of naming their Android versions after many kinds of dessert or a sweet like what we’ve known already: “Donut”, “Éclair”, “Froyo”, “Gingerbread”, “Honeycomb”, “Ice Cream Sandwich”, “Jelly Bean”, “KitKat”, “Lollipop”, and “Marshmallow” – the latest one. Android is now very popular mainly because it has a beautiful appearance, efficient working, and a lot of great apps built by developers. Google Play is an official app market that from which you can download millions of different apps for your Android devices. Well, it is really a threat to Apple iOS at the moment.
3. iOS
iOS was introduced on 29 June 2007 as the main operating system of the first Apple’s iPhone. It was and still is loved by lotsa people due to good performance and appearance. Currently, the newest version is iOS 9 and iOS 10 is on the way. One important thing is that iOS is only used for Apple’s products. No other manufacturer has been allowed to apply this OS to their machines, which somehow contributes to the iPhone’s fame nowadays.
4. BlackBerry
Here we have BlackBerry OS, the property of Research In Motion (RIM) first released in 1999 and of course developed for ONLY BlackBerry smartphones. Unlike many other operating systems, BlakBerry is really different in interface style. That probably is because of BlackBerry smartphone design, which usually comes with a trackball for moving on the menu and a qwerty keyboard. The latest version is BlackBerry 10. However, bad news for those who love this OS is that the company has announced they will be abandoning the BB10 OS in favour of Android for 2016.
5. Windows
Next, we cannot forget to mention Windows Mobile OS. In fact, some people find it easy to use while some others do not. The latest version is Windows 10 with a colorful and user-friendly interface and it is also the firm’s first attempt to “unify their desktop, tablet and phone operating systems into a single OS,” which means Windows 10 on a smartphone shares many of the same features as its desktop version. Apart from Microsoft, some manufacturers that have been producing Windows phones are HTC, Samsung, HP, and so on.
6. Bada
Interestingly, this is an operating system created by Samsung. It is designed for smartphones but not on a large scale although Bada is quite user-friendly and efficient. More specifically, only three Samsung handsets – Samsung Wave, Wave 2, and Wave 3, are running on Bada OS. The latest version Bada 2.0.5 was released on March 15, 2012.
7. Palm (aka Garnet)
Palm OS, or Garnet OS, was developed by Palm Inc. in 1996 especially for Personal Digital Assistance (PDA), and able to work on touchscreen GUI. Some years passed and the OS was upgraded to support smartphones. Nonetheless, it cannot become people’s favourite OS as well as a strong rival to Android, iOS or Windows even though it used to be employed by many well-known brands such as Lenovo, Legend Group, Janam, Kyocera and IBM.
8. Open WebOS
Open WebOS or just WebOS was developed by Palm Inc., too. Yet, after some years, it belonged to Hewlett-Packard. Back to WebOS launch, it was in 2009 and a number of smartphones and tablets used to feature this OS. HP did promote the WebOS at a very high level but still found it hard to beat Android, and had to announce to discontinue WebOS-based devices lastly. Though, existing users have been assured that they will get regular updates for the WebOS.
9. Maemo
This was kind of a product by the cooperation between Nokia and Maemo Community, used for smartphones and internet tablets. The user interface of Maemo comprised a menu from which users could go to any location and the home screen was divided into multiple sections such as Internet Search bar, shortcut icons, RSS Feed and so on. In 2010, at Mobile World Congress, Maemo project was revealed to be merged with Mobilin to create a new fresh called MeeGo. Click NEXT PAGE to know more about MeeGo!

MeeGo was considered as a mobile platform, but actually it was designed to run multiple electronic devices such as handhelds, in-car devices, televisions, and net books.
