Interesting Facts That You Are Too Lazy to Google!!

Why does freshly cut grass have a distinct smell? Why do we look better in the mirror than a photograph? Here are our top interesting facts you might have been too lazy to ‘Google’ them out!!

Interesting Facts

The distinct smell of freshly cut glass is… trauma??

You read that right! When we cut the grass, its organic compound called green leaf volatiles (GLV) released through the air is much higher. In case you didn’t know, these compounds usually support closing the wound of the plants at the place where we cut them. Furthermore, they also help to prevent fungal growth. Some of them even aid in the creation of new cells, while others act as distress signals.

For us human, we find the GLVs a pleasing smell. The group of eight, related, oxygenated hydrocarbons along with alcohol and aldehydes cause the “green odor” that we usually smell after the grass is freshly cut. However, these GLVs are quite bad for the environment, as they can form bad ozone and is the main component of photochemical smog in the atmosphere.

Why do we look better in the mirror than we do in a photo?

The next bit of interesting facts might make us wonder up until now: why do our reflection in the mirror is seemingly better than when we take a photo? Firstly, we need to know that the photos that we usually see are flipped/mirror images of ourselves. We are mostly used to seeing ourselves in the mirror, so the photograph doesn’t seem to look right. When we see a photo, we mainly expect us to look the same as we look into the mirror. However, due to our face being not symmetrical, we find it odd since the image is already flipped.

Why do our legs feel sorer when we stand than walk?

Have you ever wonder about this fact once in your life? When walking, our leg muscles are not as sore as it would when we stand. There are many reasons we need to list. Firstly, we put a lot of pressure on our calf muscles when standing, as they have to balance all of our weights. Meanwhile, other muscles in the thighs, buttocks, core and even arms help share this burden when we walk. On the other hand, we also feel tired at the feet when standing because of this reason. Furthermore, our legs don’t get any break when we stand, but they get a mini one when we lift them off the ground when moving. Additionally, our heart can’t pump blood efficiently when we stand still, this sometimes leads to a swelling feed when we stand still for a long period. When we walk, the muscles contract which helps our heart to pump blood.

Why don’t we recognize our voice in a recording?

When we hear a recording of our voice, we usually don’t recognize our own voice. So, what is the reason behind this? Firstly, when people talk, the sound waves directly travel through the air and vibrate our eardrums. Furthermore, the same situation happens whenever we heard a recording of our voice, but with one extra detail. Our vocal cores always vibrate when we speak, so these vibrations are now the second source of sound for us. As a result, we will hear a combination of these two sounds when we speak. Now, in the recording voice, the only sound we hear is the external stimulus. The vocal cord vibrations didn’t appear.
