Huawei Mate 10 Pro processor helps to drive a car
First, Huawei’s ‘RoadReader’ project is taking advantage of the AI capabilities already in the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. In details, the device uses AI to automatically distinguish between 1,000s of different objects. Using the phone’s cameras and object recognition, the team managed to teach the phone to recognize obstacles and manoeuvre around them.
Furthermore, engineers taught a Huawei Mate 10 Pro to drive a Porsche Panamera – throttle, steering wheel, breaks. Also, it leveraged the phone’s NPU, the part of the Kirin 970 chipset which accelerates machine learning tasks. In smartphones, AI powers digital assistants. Meanwhile, it wants to be a digital chauffeur in cars. If successful, Huawei will become the first mobile device manufacturer in the world to use an AI-powered smartphone to drive a car.
On the other hand, most of the companies trying to build a self-driving car are using custom computing chips made by Nvidia, Intel, MobileEye and others. Meanwhile, Huawei pulled it off with the low-power mobile chip running on a battery and two Leica cameras. Notably, their technology is intelligent enough to achieve this in just 5 weeks of work.
