This is the most played online game in the world. It even holds a Guinness record for the most subscribed MMORPG. Release in 2004 by the giant publisher Blizzard, right at the ten-year anniversary of the original Warcraft game, it has since taken the world by storm. Other games have come and gone, but none of them managed to take the throne from this giant of the genre. With new features and expansion being added continuously, and the stream of funding from subscribers, it will be a very long for any games to overtake WoW.
All the elements of a MMORPG are there, and Blizzard delivers in an amazing manner. From farming (whether for loots or agriculture) to puzzles, and mini games, everything is presented very well. Of course, the battle is the core, and it delightfully satisfy almost every players. Every time subscribers seem wanting to leave, a new expansion pack would come, with new contents and battles, and of course prizes, gamers would find it very hard to leave the game. It is just that addicting! WoW certainly belongs in the list of best MMORPGs, if not the best.
2. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (FF14: ARR)
Final Fantasy is among the best JRPGs. The story of FF14: ARR, interestingly, deserves to be a case study by itself. The initial game, FF14, was considered a disaster, with a lot of bugs and glitches that made the game almost unplayable. However, after 2 years of rebuilding the game from scratch, the 2.0 version – FF14: ARR – turned the table around spectacularly. Bugs and glitches are no more. The world is beautiful, battle system is fun, the the job class is very interesting to explore. It also has throwbacks to previous Final Fantasy for nostalgia, and also very interesting quests. This revised version truly deserves to be one of the best MMORPGs.
3. DC Universe Online
Although this game isn’t the first to feature the theme of superheroes, it takes advantage of what it has over its predecessors. Most notably, it has access to DC’s large roster of widely recognizable, and some very iconic superheroes, such as Batman and Superman. Playing alongside those heroes would be very interesting to any gamers. Furthermore, players can customize their own heroes with abilities of their choice. The tab-targeting battle system is also  interesting choice, as it feels very close to the source materials. If you love DC, you will definite want to play this game!
4. Blade and Soul
Having been released in Asia for a while, Blade and Soul has started to make a name for itself in other markets too. It was just released in North America in January this year. This game combines the fast combat system of other games with martial arts style of Chinese media, reminiscent of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The setting is in a fantasy world based on ancient China. Through taking quests, fighting and customizing your characters (MMORPGs’ specials), your aim is to e the world’s best martial artists, either by hand or by battle weapons. This game will give you a taste of Chinese martial arts!
5. Lord of the Rings Online (LotRO)
With the book considered to be the father of the fantasy genre, LotRO has a lot to offer to its players. Immerse yourself in Middle-Earth, the fantasy world with many races like dwarf, human, elf, etc. and beautiful scenery. The developer has been very successful in capturing the essence of the series to please the die-hard fans, while adding interesting aspects to get new gamers. The game has been improved continuously since the beginning, including turning to a free-to-play model. Its crafting system, economy system, and combat system is regarded highly by players.
