Curved edge smartphones: for the only purpose of beautiful design or else?

Galaxy Note Edge made its debut in 2014 at IFA. Samsung gave a curved edge smartphone to the tech world as a big surprise. Some said that it was useless and just for being innovative. They even believed that Samsung was making a new trendy design to challenge the standards set by Apple. All I can say is that is just a half-truth. Rather than starting a new age of smartphone design, this curved edge smartphone was praised for purpose.

The inspiration behind the gently curved edge smartphone is a very modern affliction – fear of missing out, or FoMo. FoMo is defined as a desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing, for example, obsessively checking of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram to keep in touch with what everyone else is up to and living in fear of missing a call. FoMO is also defined as a fear of regret or the fear of having made the wrong decision on how to spend time. Moreover, it is believed that making movements with your phone’s screen when you are in a conversation is impolite.

The curved edge smartphones were born from the notion that the users could check their phones in such social situations or in some urgent circumstance. Working on this purpose, Samsung smartphones allow users to register five contacts with individual colours. Furthermore, when these curved edge smartphones are placed face down, the curved sides will light up with the appropriate colour of the contact who is calling. Therefore, users can discreetly check their phones without interrupting the conversation.
