Good news of the day: Apple is finally adopting USB type-C like the rest of the world! This new change is going to apply in their upcoming 2019 products. Keep reading for more details!
USB Type-C change in Apple iPhone 2019
Better late than never may be a proper expression to describe Apple’s recent decision to finally join the rest of the premium smartphone industry: adopting the USB Type-C port for charging and connectivity. Reportedly, Apple is redesigning chargers and related interface for its next-generation iPhone and iPad devices. And will likely have its 2019 series of iPhones come with USB Type-C support. According to sources at analogue IC vendors, the reason why we won’t see USB-C in any of this year’s models is that the company “is still in its redesign phase”.
Like the Lightning connector, USB-C ports are reversible. They also support the Thunderbolt standard, which offers a higher rate of data transfer, though applications of the standard on a mobile device are limited. Oddly, the report doesn’t go into specifics regarding whether USB-C will be applied on both ends of the iPhone cable, or just the one that goes into the charging brick/computer. It’s entirely reasonable that Apple would switch that end from USB-A over to USB-C; while leaving the Lightning port on the other end intact. Thus, making it is possible to continue reaping the benefits of accessory licensing.
On a side note, perhaps this is also the reason why Apple decided to decrease the price of their USB-C to Lightning cable not long ago. Although it’s quite rare for the company to reduce the prices of its accessories, Apple lowers down the cost of USB-C to Lightning cable from a whopping $25 to $19. You can read more about it HERE.
The possibility of USB Type-C in Apple products
At this point, it’s already pretty late in the 2018 iPhones’ development cycle. So it won’t be able to make the necessary changes in time, without possible production delays. In the end, we have a firm belief that this new change is going to happen sooner or later. Stay tuned with us for more updates!
