5G iPhone is reportedly coming in 2020 with Intel Modem!
According to various reports, many brands are now working on their 5G devices. Previously, a conference dedicated to 4G and 5G networks have taken place in Hong Kong. Furthermore, many phones manufacturers have used the occasion to announce their plans for the next big thing in the mobile world in 2019. In details, we have big names such as Asus, HMD Global, LG, Motorola, Oppo, Sony, vivo, OnePlus and Xiaomi joining the 5G race!
Based on our sources, it seems like Apple has finally decided to join the battle. From “a source with knowledge of Apple’s plans”, the US manufacturer is aiming to introduce their first 5G iPhone in the year 2020. On the other hand, they also note that the company plans to use Intel’s 8161 5G modem chip, although there are still some technical issues around heat dissipation that need to be resolved.
Besides, Apple has reportedly also been chatting with MediaTek to supply the chips as a “Plan B.” For now, Apple is currently using Intel for the modems in their 2018 iPhone lineup. The series now includes the newly debut iPhone XS, XS Max and the more affordable iPhone Xr. However, they are reportedly not going to use the company’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips for the 2020 model. From what we gather, Apple could be the “main volume driver” for its modem. Moreover, Intel also told The Verge that their “5G customer engagements and roadmap have not changed for 2018 through 2020. We remain committed to our 5G plans and projects.”
