Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) are not only about Pokemon and Final Fantasy like many people thought. From the SNES era to modern days devices, there have been many good games of the genre. Let’s take a look at our list of greatest JRPGs of all time!

1. Final Fantasy

Although we mentioned that JRPGs are not only about Pokemon and Final Fantasy, it’s hard to leave these two games out. Final Fantasy has become one of the staples for JRPGs, and even though so many games have been released (Final Fantasy XV will be released on November 29), their mark on the industry is still great. Deep plots, great character developments, interesting gameplay that require both strategy and grinding, all of those make up one of the most interesting experience in gaming. It is, without a doubt, one of the greatest JRPGs

If we have to pick the best of the Final Fantasy series, it would be VII. This is arguable, as some will say that IV, VI, IX or X deserve the title, and they have compelling arguments too. However, it is a fact that VII was the most successful. It managed to break the Western market, introduce the JRPG genre to the West, and has been the best-selling Final Fantasy in the franchise. The tragic backstory of the main character Cloud, the beautiful scenery of places such as Cosmo Canyon, fighting the main antagonist Sephiroth with his epic theme in the background, etc. It is a journey full of unforgettable moments.

2. Kingdom Hearts

This is a game from the same creator of the Final Fantasy series, Square Enix. It has a strange combination: Final Fantasy heroes with Disney characters, seen through the eyes of an original boy character Sora. However, Kingdom Hearts made it work in a perfect way. The combat system was fun too, combining the hack-and-slash with command input found in final fantasy. It will truly be a wonderful journey back to your childhood!

3. Dragon Quest

The dragon quest series have been a true classic. Especially with Dragon Quest 5, which has been remade twice in the last two decades. It has its art from the creator of Dragon Ball, and a deep story spread through different time periods. The game has truly touched the hearts of gamers. One little interesting fact: he original monster-collecting concept of Dragon Quest 5 inspired the game Pokemon, which has become a phenomenon later on! This game deserves its place as one of the greatest JRPGs.

4. Chrono Trigger

Another timeless gem in JRPG genre, Chrono Trigger has stood the test of time extremely well after two decades. It was conceived by the creators of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball. The art style of the game is incredible, and the cast resonates very well with the audience. The plot revolves around a time-travel storyline, and has 13 endings! The soundtrack is also lauded as one of the best of all games. This is arguably Square Enix’s best creation alongside Final Fantasy. Besides being one of the greatest JPRGs ever, it is even considered one of the best games ever!

5. Pokemon Gold/Silver

Of course we can’t leave out this giant in our list of greatest JRPGs. It has been considered by many as the poster-child of JRPGs. The system is very simple, yet engaging and appealing: catching monster, duel with other trainers to become the best. If we have to pick from the series, Gold and Silver would stand out the most. It introduced many features which are still used later on: day and night cycles, new Pokemons, breeding, and letting you visit other regions. This formula is still used by subsequent titles.
